ombre cake bites

I made an attempt at these the other day. I figured I had the leftover cake, buttercream, and some yummy ganache, so why not? I'd never made these before but I thought the different cake colors would be cool. So easy too: just mash cake with buttercream, roll, and dip. Voila! Cake bite. I think my favorite thing about this though, is that bowl. I forgot I had it! So cute.

Next time I try these I'm going to go it with tempered chocolate. I think they will hold up better and also have that nice snap to them when you bite into it. Chocolate's the best. Colors are too.

Be giving thanks

You know what makes me happy? Smelling this simmering on my stove top. Oh my, the spices! the orange zest! the sugar! I swear-those are the things the holidays are made of. Happy Thanksgiving you turkeys.

ps, if you actually want to taste this (and I know you do), I just might have this as a French macaroon flavor at the Beehive Bazaar. Just sayin'...

Indiewire. Or, we've done it again.

Looks like the film gods are starting to like us. INDIEWIRE (yes!) featured Ryan Baxter: Reenactor as "Project of the Day" today. I'm so in love with them right now. This really is big for us!

Moveable Fest. Or, how we got a spot on the web

Hello there. What you see below is just a small snippet of why it's fun to make a movie. Albeit there can be a lot of not-fun, but somehow things like this make up for it. There are only 3 weeks left until this fundraiser closes. REMEMBER: if we don't reach our goal, we get nothing, nada, zip.
Sad.

MOVEABLE FEST and RYAN BAXTER
. A love affair.

Counting Down

The 2011 Holiday Beehive Bazaar is only 3 weeks away! I just spent hours last night working on labels, signs, etc... and I haven't even gotten to most of the baking yet. Time is running out!

If you are in Utah and you want to make the drive to Provo, come check it out! I haven't done a fair like this before, so it's exciting to see what will happen. I hope to be organized enough to post pictures of what I'll be selling, but here's a peek: french macaroons, holiday chocolate bark, chocolate truffles, marshmallows, hot chocolate on a stick... And it's all HANDMADE by yours truly. Now you see why I have a lot of work ahead!

In the meantime, if you like American Apparel, and you happened to not know about this, well, here's an early Christmas present.

Oh, and if chocolate's your thing, check this out. I'm not kidding, this really is some of the best of the best around. I was so happy when I saw it!

ombre

The thing I've loved about doing cakes is that every time I'm asked, I get to do something new, different, and it totally let's me learn a new technique. I've been really lucky that way. When I was chatting with the lovely bride about this cake, I was super excited to try out the ombre color. Quite honestly, I'd never heard of 'ombre', but clearly it's all about the color gradient. She was super laid back but knew exactly what she wanted. It's the easiest kind of client. I had to search out a good white cake recipe. And I mean white, because then the color would get all messed up. I felt that this was a decent one, but even with my tweaks it didn't quite have the flavor I wanted. It was still good and most importantly it created an amazing white canvas to dye the colors the way they needed to be. I obviously couldn't cut in to the bride's cake, so I made a small one to cut in to.

Oh, and let's not forget the ever-decadent Italian buttercream that this baby is wrapped in. yumm

Restock

Matt and I have some Christmas restocking to do this year. I'm on the lookout for awesome ornaments and a 2ft pink tree. Every year we give each other a new ornament, and every year I want to to be better than the year before.
I have such a thing for Anthropologie's Christmas stuff. I always find the cutest decor there and I can always count on it being super unique and fun. Urban Outfitters has some great stuff too. Take a look at these! How cute! A shopping trip is definitely in order.

So cuuuuute

blocked

I guess I have nothing to say today. So here's a little spice for your life.

Homerun

I honestly hadn't heard of this site until today. I got an email from my mom with this little gem in it. Who loves Target! Oh, and here's this if you're interested. I thought I'd just share what I found in my inbox this morning.

Also, I am working on a wedding cake this week, so I haven't had a lot of time to get my pics together. I want to show you our culinary trip to the Big Apple! I'm still working that food off of my thighs.

In the meantime, I should confess that The Wonder Years has taken over my life. The whole series is on Netflix and it's like I'm in junior high all over again. Such a crush on that Kevin Arnold.

green

So we finally got our stuff together enough to start the juicing. We decided to start a little easy and still have solid foods like salads for the next few days. That way our bodies don't freak out. So far it's been harder than I thought. It's a lot of food, a lot of preparation, and that green juice you see up there? Not that good. I'm surprised because usually I like that stuff, but I don't know about this one... I'm just looking forward to later this week when the juices have berries in them. That's more my style.

We're crazy.

On the other hand, Matt and I celebrated our impending green captivity with some In 'n Out, Reese's, a chocolate shake, and some leftover Halloween candy. And then we watched Willow. 80's cinema makes everything better.

Never Have I Ever

-wanted to start a juice fast so much. We haven't started yet. Not my fault though! The juicer we got was defective which then needed to be returned which then needed to be reordered. Saturday's the day I swear!
-wanted to revamp my wardrobe so bad. Seriously, I'm almost to that point where everything must go. And then I remember that you need serious moola to then refill it again. whoops.
-wanted to just do ballet every day. Ok I lied, I actually have always wanted to do it more than I have been. But could you imagine the core muscles I'd have?

-needed a massage so badly. My poor body.
-needed to get back in to yoga. See above comment.
-thought I would ever be the one to try wearing those fake glasses when I had to deal with them legitimately for most of my life until I got Lasik. What we do for fashion...
-wanted something to work out so badly for Matt and me! The waiting is the worst.

By the way, I'm super in love with these shoes I saw at Nordstrom Rack the other night. It was that moment when you try something on and it just fits. sigh. So cute, they are.

How I spent my Halloween

You know you're getting older when you can't even figure out a costume to wear on Halloween. Actually, let's be honest-I don't think I cared that much this year(!). Which is weird. I usually try to one-up my costume from the year before and make it different than what everyone else does. This year fell flat and hard. Matt wasn't even in to it. I think because his costume last year was probably too hard to beat. He couldn't even top himself.

Ah yes, I am married to this mustache. Just go grab that bottle of Tapatio out of your fridge and make a comparison. Spot. On.

So, since Matt and I played ADULTS for Halloween, the only excitement we could get for the day was getting my blood drawn. I had to do this anyway for something else so off we went to the clinic. I don't do blood by the way. There's something about the fact that it's supposed to remain
inside by body that makes my brain freak out. Let me prove. One time, I went to donate platelets with my sister and when the lady was done drawing that little bit for testing, I stood up, wobbled in to the other room and passed out. So freaky. I'm so unfamiliar with doctors and hospitals and I never do anything like this. The closest I get to hospitals is to visit new babies. I mean, I touch raw meat and get my hands dirty, and I'll try any type of weird food (minus the bugs. gross) so I seriously had no idea I was like this. Anyway, I tried my hardest to control myself. Have you ever willed yourself out of passing out? I was SO DRAINED, so tingly, and I swear all I could do was concentrate on breathing evenly. Poor blood guy looked a little concerned. Apparently all the color drains from your face and you get clammy. I must have looked amazing.

In the end, we did get to do something a little fun. Matt and the band he's in with his brothers (Birthquake!) played on PCTV (Park City TV). Go Birthquake brothers!
